Tri-County Law Enforcement Training Consortium

Kellogg Community College offers a wide variety of in-service training opportunities for criminal justice professionals. Most of our seminars are funded through grants with the Michigan Justice Training Commission. This means you receive top-notch training at a bargain basement price (a nominal fee is charged to cover MJTC non-reimbursable expenses). All seminars are eligible for 302 funds.


This training schedule provides a list of the in-service training being offered by Kellogg Community College, Criminal Justice Programs for the year 2008. All courses are funded by a grant from MCOLES and approved for 302 funds.

2008 In-Service Training Courses

BASIC SWAT TRAINING:
presented by Todd Madsen and Mike Wood (maximum enrollment 20)

This training is designed for police officers that have been recently assigned to SWAT or to a Raid Entry team. This 40-hour training will provide officers with the basic skills needed to perform in a tactical position. The focus will be on the incident command system, teamwork, and working in a high risk environment in a safe manner. Participants will be taught internationally-accepted SWAT and Military tactics. Participants will also be instructed on response to new threats that have now become common, like WMD. Officers will obtain a basic understanding of call out procedures for barricades, hostage incidents, and warrant service. Each officer will obtain a basic understanding of the deployment and mission of each tactical element during a call out.

April 21-25, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Consortium Fee $220 Non-Consortium Fee $440.

BULLETPROOF MIND:
presented by Lt. Col. Dave Grossman (maximum enrollment 40)

This one-day seminar is intended to help officers mentally prepare for the challenges of policing in an increasingly violent society. The course will include a review of violence, the psychological cost of conflict, the physiology and psychology of a conflict situation, post traumatic stress disorder, and special emphasis will be placed on how to develop and maintain the spirit which enables officers to continue to protect and serve their communities during times of crisis.

EMOTIONAL SURVIVAL FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT:
presented by Mr. Kevin Gilmartin (maximum enrollment 90)

This one-day seminar is designed to assist law enforcement professionals by the development of behavioral strategies to inoculate against loss of idealism and inappropriate behavior patterns. It will review short and long-term effects on law enforcement officers on both the personal and professional aspects of their lives.

March 24, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., . Consortium Fee $45; Non-Consortium Fee $90

INTERVIEW & INTERROGATION – Basic
presented by John E. Reid and Associates, Inc. (maximum enrollment 35)

This three-day program will assist law enforcement officers in developing the skills necessary to effectively interview and interrogate subjects during the course of a criminal investigation.  Officers will learn how to interpret verbal and physical behavior as they relate to truth and deception.  They will also learn a formalized step approach to conducting an interrogation and proven effective methods for lawfully eliciting confessions.

April 1-3, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., Consortium Fee $190 Non-Consortium Fee $380.

INTERVIEW & INTERROGATION – Advanced
presented by John E. Reid and Associates, Inc. (maximum enrollment 35)

This one-day program will assist police employees in developing the skills necessary to effectively interview and interrogate suspects.  This advanced workshop will present new techniques to enhance the interrogator's ability to obtain a legally acceptable confession.  These new techniques will give the interrogator the ability to tailor an interrogation to the individual suspect.

April 4, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., Consortium Fee $65 Non-Consortium Fee $130.

K-9 OFFICER/HANDLER UPDATE:
presented by Mr. Brian Gregory (maximum enrollment 20)

This two-day training will provide current K-9 handlers the opportunity to gain further knowledge, update their current skills, and learn advanced methods with their K-9 partners. We have over 15 K-9 teams working in our consortium area. In discussions with some of the K-9 officers, they felt this training would be very beneficial to them and that all the K-9 units in the area would attend. This will also be open to K-9 units outside the consortium area.

August 7-8, 2008, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Consortium Fee $70 Non-Consortium Fee $140.

LEGAL UPDATE:
presented by Mr. Jeff Steffel (maximum enrollment 40)

This six-hour workshop will concentrate on recent state and federal court decisions that have a direct relationship to police and prosecutorial procedures. Legal updates referencing legislation and court decision and their impact on arrest, confessions, pursuit driving, force issues, entrapment, and identification procedures will be addressed.

April 25, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.. Consortium Fee: $40; Non-Consortium Fee: $80.

PROTECTIVE SERVICES TRAINING:
presented by Mr. Paul Castle (maximum enrollment each session, 20)

This five-day course is designed for on and off duty officers who are tasked with protecting very important persons in static and mobile situations. The course is a good balance of classroom work and hands-on training drills. In addition, students get a full day of live-fire training under controlled conditions they are likely to face.

Session I:
March 10-24, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.. Consortium Fee: $75; Non-Consortium Fee: $150.

Session II:
Sept. 8-12, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.. Consortium Fee: $75; Non-Consortium Fee: $150.

SEARCH & SEIZURE UPDATE:
presented by Mr. Jeff Steffel (maximum enrollment 40)

This six-hour course will examine recent judicial decisions on search and seizure. Search warrant processes, warrantless searches and seizures, and proper legal application for admissibility of evidence will be addressed.

October 17, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.. Consortium Fee: $40; Non-Consortium Fee: $80.

STREET CRIMES & SURVEILLANCE TECHNIQUES:
presented by John E. Reid and Associates, Inc. (maximum enrollment 40)

This three-day seminar is designed to teach patrol officers proven and effective strategies for developing informants and conducting successful surveillance on street crime suspects.  The course will include instruction on conducting street interviews, gathering criminal intelligence, developing informants, setting up stake outs, conducting surveillance, identifying car traps and hidden compartments, and much more.

May 14-16, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Consortium Fee $170; Non-Consortium Fee $340.

TACTICAL DRIVING & PURSUIT:
presented by Mr. Joe Humphries (maximum enrollment each session, 12)

Officers are instructed in the proper skills necessary for the safe and effective use of patrol vehicles. This one-day course incorporates evasive maneuvering, brake and steer, lane change, serpentine, radius turn, and a turnaround into a comprehensive challenge course. Under the direct supervision of a driving instructor, officers will engage in pursuit activities and demonstrate behaviors consistent with safe and legal vehicle operation.

Four Sessions: October 4, 11, 18, & 25, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Consortium Fee $90; Non-Consortium Fee $180.
